Film Review of Cry Freedom


1. Who was your favorite character from the film? Why?

From the beginning, when Doctor Ramphele came out on scene I thought she was going to be one of my favorite characters. She doesn't allow any person to despise her or "look at less" simply because she has black skin color, she imposes herself in front of whites and I love that. And, obviously Steve Biko and Donald Woods for the fight that each one does, and the relationship that they come to form

2. What was your favorite scene from the film? Why?

There were several parts of the movie that I liked a lot, like when Donald Woods says "don't blame all the whites for apartheid" or when Biko confronts the judge and he says that they use violence, but Steve tells him that they are now in a confrontation but there is no violence applied. Also small details like when Woods's children embrace the maid to celebrate the new year.
However, one of the scenes that I liked the most was Biko's funeral. See all those people, thousands and thousands of people, gathered to dismiss a great activist who was fighting for their rights and that after everyone makes their big cry for the fight, it's something really exciting.
And something I also want to highlight is the end, when they show all the names of the deceased and the causes of this, I feel that that makes it even more real.

3. How does the film differ from the other films? Use the article from The Guardian to help you

This film was different to the previous ones, firstly, because it shows the development of a friendship between a white and a black person, and, although in a film that we already saw this also happened, in this film the black character disappears and the film continues with a white protagonist in the apartheid struggle. And, secondly, the protagonist (Biko) isn't an important ANC character, but was a character of the people who fought for the people, he represented all the ideals that the black people had and all they wanted to achieve.

    I think Dr. Ramphele and Winnie are my favorite female characters of all the films that we have watched, they are totally badasses

    I like Biko´s funeral too, show the people of southafrica united for a leader.

1. In general, what did you like and dislike about the film? Something that surprised me every time was the level of explicit violence that they showed in the movie, as when they killed the enemies with knives / machetes and even set them on fire while still alive. But, the best part for me was when  the old black man told the story  of when they were being attacked ; he was in his mother's house with his son, he heard that the whites were giving them orders not to talk and just shoot, then he went to see how his wife was to finally find her lying on the floor with her intestines out of her body, then went to see his baby and realized they had murdered his three-month-old son.  I think that his story was very moving. Something that I didn't like were the characters. It bothered me that they were white people with privileges even when they were mixed with the blacks. Film Review of Catch a Fire

1. In general, what did you like and dislike about the film? This movie was very different from the previous ones mainly because it's about normal people, and that's one of the things I liked the most.  We can observe a black man having a normal life, where it's shows that he is being educated next to white men (even if he's sitting at the end of the room). The scenography or setting was also something that I liked and I noticed too much. There was a big difference between the dwellings of the whites and the blacks, since in the first one you see everything green and with water to spare, while that of the others is completely dry and brown. In addition, whenever the whites did an outdoor activity, we see industries, or the plant actually, in the background. And, finally, the scene that I liked the most was when they made a comparison of the singing. The whites sang celebrating the genocide they had committed and gave them recognition medals, while the blacks sang...

Film Review of Invictus

1. Who is your favorite character from the film? Most of the time, the main characters are people's favorites, and that's exactly what happened with me haha. I love how Morgan Freeman interprets Mandela, they have a spectacular resemblance, but my favorite was Francois because in him it's observed how his mentality is changing, just like the people, and in the same way he changes the racist mentality that had his own family. The gesture of giving her maid an entrance to watch the game was the key to demonstrating this. And I also like how he strives to integrate himself and his teammates with the people, whether black or white (but especially black). 2.  How does this film compare to all the other films we have seen in class? Although this film also touches some issues about apartheid, I think it doesn't belong much to this category, rather it's a Hollywood movie that was simply located in South Africa.
